The researcher at the Applied Economic Research Institute (Ipea), Roberto Passos Nogueira, a militant of the health reform, and the Coordinator of the Unesco Chair of Bioethics of the UnB, Volnei Garrafa, a personal friend and tutored by Berlinguer, in the decade of 90, when he developed his post-doctoral studies in Italy, will participate in the debate .

Berlinguer was physician, bioethicist, senator and congressman in Italy and militant of the Communist Party. As other like Paulo Freire and Carl Marx, Berlinguer was an author abhorred during the dictatorship. “They were people bringing a renewed policy thinking for the country. Giovanni entered the black list. They had a syllabus that inspired us a lot in this period, in the 70´s and early 80´s”, says Roberto Passos Nogueira, in an interview about the life of Berlinguer for Dialogues Program of UnB TV.

Volnei Garrafa defines him as the “intellectual and ideological mentor of the Unified Health System”. With more than 40 books published, one of them “The Human Market”, resulting from Garrafa´s postdoc. At this time, between 1991 and 1993, Berlinguer presented bioethics to his friend, “he opened my eyes to Bioethics”, says Garrafa. The research was a study on the primitive market to the technological market: when the man was sold as a whole – slavery – to the market of buying and selling of separate parts, such as kidneys, gametes, eggs, etc.
