Summary

On 26 May the fourth meeting of 2011 the “Cycle of Debates on Bioethics, and Health Diplomacy” was held and sponsored by the Center for Bioethics and Diplomacy Studies in Health (NETHIS), in partnership with the graduate program in bioethics at the University of Brasilia, with support of the Regional Direction of Brasilia of the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (FIOCRUZ Brasília) and of PAHO/WHO/Brazil. This meeting was about the cycle theme “South-South Cooperation in health vis-à-vis regional integration processes” and was attended, as a lecturer, by Dr. Rodolfo Rodriguez; as moderator, by Dr. Ricardo Caldas and, as coordinator, by Dr. Mary Alice Fortunato Barbosa. Dr. Rodolfo Rodriguez held an exhibition of the health framework in Mercosur, in historical perspective. He addressed what has occurred and what it is predicted for the future, both in the particular context of Mercosur as in a broader reflection on other regional bloc – Unasur. This cycle of debates represented once again a relevant contribution to the construction of NETHIS works. Especially, it is important to refer to the comparison between the Unasur and Mercosur, or rather the need to differentiate their characteristics, which reflects on the agenda of both institutions.
