The object of the discipline is based on the following concepts:

  1. Inequality understood as the growing chasm in terms of wealth and well-being separating the countries;
  2. Development as an expression of the advances of science, technology and innovation;
  3. Cooperation with the purpose of “… solving international problems of economic, social, cultural or humanitarian kind, and promoting and encouraging respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms for all, without distinction as to race, sex, language or religion”, as postulated in the United Nations Charter.

A correlation between these meanings allows one to discuss whether it is possible to reduce the inequality between countries at different stages of development through effective forms of international cooperation.
