Registration now opened for participation in the V Congress of Medical Humanities, which takes place from December 2nd to 4th in Goiânia (GO). The meeting, which takes place since 2010 under the organization of the Federal Council of Medicine (CFM), has as main objective to stimulate medical education that enhances the understanding of human beings and their context.
Doctors of many specialties, teachers, academics and professionals from related areas interested in humanistic knowledge back to medical practice and health are expected in Congress. The activities will be held at the headquarters of the Regional Council of Medicine of the State (Cremego).
“It is important for the medical community to think if doctors and medical students are managing to make the scientific and technological knowledge reach the patient respecting their personal values in a doctor-patient relationship characterized by good medical practice”, says the Secretary General of CFM, Henrique Batista e Silva, who is also Coordinator of the Commission of Humanities in Medicine, in charge of coordinating the event.
One thing new at the V Congress is the possibility of submission of papers in session called Free Themes. To the members of the Committee of Humanities in Medicine, this event signals to the medical community and society the importance of stimulating a reflection on the practice of the profession from the perspective of humanism, defined as a “set of ideals and principles that value the human action”.
In the assessment of the group, this is a set of ideals that should be part of the formation of the doctor as a professional able to understand and care for his/her patients. The Commission believes that teaching through the Arts and Humanities is a feature that proves particularly useful in this mission, because it facilitates the understanding of the human being and its entire context.
The schedule – which is being prepared with the contribution of National Executive Direction of Medical Students (Denem) – includes debates on the humanistic mode of teaching medicine through literature, film, poetry, music and theatre. In the preliminary version, available below, the participation of renowned Brazilian and international experts are included.
Among those who have confirmed their presence, Antonio López Vega, professor of contemporary history of the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, in addition to professors from the University of São Paulo (USP), the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro State (Unirio), representatives of NGOs, book authors, members of specialty societies etc.
The expectation of the organizers is that the V Congress attracts the interest of the teacher and students community, “because the youth is able to print a new quality in the doctor-patient relationship”, defended former President of CFM, Roberto Luiz d’Avila, who is collaborating with the organization.
