Summary
On 27 October the ninth meeting of 2011 of the “cycle of Debates on Bioethics, and Health Diplomacy” was held, sponsored by the Center for Bioethics and Diplomacy Studies in health (NETHIS), in partnership with the graduate program in bioethics at the University of Brasilia, with support of the Regional Direction of Brasilia of the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (FIOCRUZ Brasília) and of PAHO/WHO/Brazil. This meeting was about the cycle theme “Social Determination of Health, inequalities and injustices in International Relations” and it was attended, as a lecturer, by Dr. Jarbas Barbosa (SVSMS). As a debater, the event was attended by Dr. Félix Rígoli (PAHO/WHO) and, as coordinator of the session, Dr. José Paranaguá Santana, Coordinator of NETHIS.
The lecturer began his speech by making a conceptual approach on the social determination of health, emphasizing the importance of the subject for discussions in the field of public health. Then, he analyzed important health indicators and socioeconomic indicators. Thus, discussed the social determinants of health in the Brazilian context, highlighting elements of the Declaration of the World Conference of social determinants in health, adopted in Rio de janeiro in October 21, 2011. Finally he approached the theme of injustice in international relations and diplomacy aspects in health.
