Can inequalities between countries, with respect to conditions of health, wellness, scientific and technological development, be lessened with international cooperation? This was the main argument raised by the Coordinator of Nethis, José Paranaguá de Santana, in class for master´s degree and PhD students of the Post-Graduate Program in Bioethics at the University of Brasilia (UnB) on the afternoon of Tuesday, April 7.

desigualdade desenvolvimento e cooperação

Under the title An interdisciplinary dialogue, Paranaguá presented the main theoretical references of Nethis and discussed the correlations of concepts: “inequality”, “development” and “cooperation”. “This circle of fire (image to the side) feeds itself. The inequalities among the countries will aggravate the higher the scientific, technological and economic development. There is an abism that separates those who are partially beneficiaries from the ones coexisting with the burden”, says Paranaguá.

He points out that the economic, scientific and technological power is a dispute between countries and also of large private companies interested in producing the most diverse materials, such as medicines, food and other products for human use. “The front door to try to not to “burn” with the circle of fire, is called regulation” , he defends.

For Paranaguá, the State must stand against the interests of society by regulating the production, dissemination and consumption of products and/or services, both those who are indispensable to tackle diseases such as those detrimental to health and welfare of individuals and collectivities. “We are talking about companies that operate in various parts of the world, such as tobacco, for example. It is essential a link between international cooperation and State regulation for the definition of public policies on a global scale”, Paranaguá believes .
