The Collegiate Board of Anvisa approved on Thursday (August 20th) the beginning of the toxicology re-evaluation of five active ingredients of pesticides used in Brazil: glyphosate, lactofen, abamectin, carbofuran and thiran.

By law, the registration of pesticides has no expiration date, but the re-evaluations are made to review product safety limits in the face of new scientific information on these substances. In the process of registration of pesticides in Brazil, Anvisa evaluates the impact of these substances on human health, both the farmer and the consumer.

The next step is the publication of public consultations on the substances analyzed, so that those interested can send contributions to Anvisa. As a result of the evaluations, the Agency may decide to keep the record without changes, to request changes in formulation, dosage or method of application, to restrict production or use, and to cancel or to suspend the registration of the pesticide in the country.

Glifosato Glyphosate

Broad spectrum herbicide, toxicological class IV (slightly toxic), currently has the largest production volumes of all herbicides. It is used in agriculture, forestry, urban and domestic areas. Its use has increased considerably with the development of genetically modified crop varieties resistant to it.

Glyphosate has been recently classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), an agency of the World Health Organization (WHO), as likely to be carcinogen in humans.

Lactofen

Class III herbicide (mildly toxic), is used in applications of post-emergence of weeds in soybean culture.

Abamectin

Acaricide, insecticide and nematicide class I (extremely toxic). It is used in foliar application on crops of cotton, potato, coffee, onions, citrus, coconut, carnation, chrysanthemum, peas, beans, green beans, figs, apples, papaya, mango, watermelon, melon, strawberry, cucumber, pear, peach, red pepper, tomato, soy, pink, grape and bulblets. Also used in the treatment of industrial sugar cane and cotton seed, onion, carrot, melon, tomato, corn and soybeans, and applied in soil on tomato culture.

Carbofuran

Insecticide, acaricide, pesticide and nematicide class I (extremely toxic). Applied in soil on crops of cotton, peanuts, rice, banana, potato, coffee, sugar cane, carrots, beans, tobacco, corn, cabbage, tomatoes and wheat. Also used in cotton seeds, rice, beans, corn and wheat.

Thiran:

Class II fungicide (highly toxic). Used in the treatment of cotton seed, peanuts, rice, oats, barley, peas, beans, corn, sorghum and pastures, soy, wheat and soil on potato culture.
